The 15th of August is a very important day in the history of our country India. On this day in 1947 India became independent. We won freedom after a hard struggle and sacrifice of thousands of lives of patriots. On this day our first Prime Minister Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled The National Flag at The Red Fort for the first time. The Independence Day is celebrated all over India with great joy. People Fly the tricolor. National Anthem is sung with flute and drum and then march past and procession in the streets takes place. Homage is paid to those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country. The Independence Day reminds us of those patriots who fought and suffered to win freedom for us.

Today is 70th Independence Day of India. I am wishing a very Happy Independence Day to all Indians. Wait!!! Can I wish you Independence Day as an Indian woman? Or can I celebrate Independence Day after 69 years of independence in India where crimes against women are increasing day by day?

“Crime against women” is referred as direct or indirect physical or mental cruelty to women. It includes rape, sexual assault, insult to modesty, kidnapping, abduction, cruelty by intimate partner or relatives, trafficking, persecution for dowry, dowry deaths, indecency and all other crimes listed in Indian Penal Code. According to a survey India is the fourth most dangerous place in the world for women to live in.

According to a report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in 2015, 2.24 million Crimes against women were reported over the past decade: 26 crimes against women are reported every hour, or one complaint every two minutes. Many crimes against women were not reported to police due to the social stigma attached to the cases of rape and molestation.

It is true that women are now participate in areas like education, sports, politics, media, art, culture etc. like men. Indira Gandhi was world’s largest serving prime minister of India. Prativa Patil was first female President of India. Women played very important role in India’s independence. Even today many women are doing well in their respective areas. However most of the women in India are facing sexual as well as mental assault almost everyday both inside and outside their houses.

According to fundamental right of freedom of independent India every Indian has some rights like freedom of speech and expression, right to choose any profession, right of life and liberty. In Right to equality act it is mentioned that men and women are equal. Every Indian has right to be educated according to right to education act.

Do we women really have those rights in the practical world?

The National Crime Records Bureau reveal that a crime against a woman is committed every 3 minutes, a woman is raped every 29 minutes, a dowry death occurs every 77 minutes, and one case of cruelty committed by either the husband or relative of the husband occurs every 9 minutes.

In many villages girls are not allowed to study still now. Women are often not allowed to work especially after marriage not only in small towns but also in big cities also. In most of the families men take all the decisions, women just follow. Women are not even allowed to express their opinions even in any household matter.

Child marriage is considered as crime but these marriages have been still continues to these days mainly in rural areas. According to UNICEF 47% of Indian women are married before the age of 18 which is the legal age for marriage. In rural areas this percentage is 56%. Child marriages not only take away the opportunity of education but also the childhood of little girls.

Domestic violence in India is one of the biggest problems. Around 70% women in India are victims of domestic violence. It is  a criminal offence according to IPC. However it increases day by day. Domestic violence can be physical, psychological or sexual abuse. Most of the times it is considered as private or family matter as many women refuse to report against it. They are treated or pressurized not to complain.

In India male-female sex ratio is skewed in favor of males. The main reason is increasing numbers of abortion of female fetuses. Girls are not even allowed to born in many places and we are talking about gender equality and freedom of women!!!

Rape in India has been described as one of India’s most common crimes against women. Girls are not allowed to go outside alone in the evening or night as their family is afraid of rape or eve teasing. But are they safe in their homes? Women are not raped outside only but into their own houses also. If a woman is raped by her husband is not considered as rape according to our society. However it is a crime under IPC.

After Nirbhaya rape case or Delhi gang rape case in December 2012 Public protests took place in New Delhi on 21 December 2012. Thousands of protesters clashed with police and battled Rapid Action Force units. Similar protests occurred throughout the country. Protests occurred online as well on the social networking sites Facebook and WhatsApp, with users replacing their profile images with a black dot symbol. As the news of the rape broke, the media went into activity, not just in tracking the case but also supports the protestors. Debates were taken place in the news channels. Everybody thought that number crime against women might be decreased but after sometimes the protest became stopped and nothing is changed.

This becomes a new tradition. After any incident like this some protest and media reports are shown for few days then everything became normal. Crime against women is increasing. A rape victim faces more difficulties, harassment and assaults than the accused.

Why women are always prohibited to go outside? People should teach boys how to behave with women and respect them instead of asking girls to be careful. How long women are blamed for type of cloths they wear or character? The most common and illogical one “at night what was she doing at the streets alone?” Why doesn’t anybody understand a woman is not responsible for sexual harassments or rape cases? It is the dreadful mentality of those criminals.

The most horrible crime in India is acid attack. Acid attack not only ruins the identity but also destroys the self-confidence of the victim completely. Women belonging to any class, caste, creed or religion can be victims of this cruel form of violence and disfigurement, a premeditated crime intended to kill or maim permanently and act as a lesson to put a woman in her place. In India, acid attacks on women who dared to refuse a man’s proposal of marriage or asked for a divorce are a form of revenge. Acid is cheap, easily available, and the quickest way to destroy a woman’s life. The number of acid attacks has been rising.

Will the situation of women never change in India? How long we women will suffer these kinds of crimes? Can we be truly independent in our country? Yes, we can. Only we women can change our present situation and make a bright future for us. Every woman in India has to protest against any crime on her or on any other woman. If a woman does not support another woman then who does support her?

Only rules, laws and government initiatives are not enough to stop crime against women in a country of huge population like India. Common people have to come forward and stand against these crimes. Boys and girls both are equal in every field if they are treated as same from their childhood and get same opportunities.

Lack of education and orthodox mentality of people in villages the condition of women is more painful than cities and towns. Government should take some steps against it. It is not only the duty of government only; it is the duty of us also to do something against it. Instead of kept girls into the homes, people should teach the boys the moral values of life and how to respect women. This is the time we all Indians need to show our unity. Jai Hind…

  1. I agree with your views here. While it has been 70 years since Independence, India as a nation has a long way to go before every citizen can truly experience freedom.

    It has been a very slow learning curve, and hopefully we will transform the nation in the coming decade faster than the past. We can truly celebrate Independence Day as a victorious event, when all our citizens have the freedom to live their lives without any fear or restrictions.

    It’s a long way to go, and hopefully we can get there faster, but all of us must make an effort to curb the problems we all face today. Elect the right people, and make society a better place by rectifying orthodox mindsets.

  5. Interesting, I realized most religions today in the world, are patriarchal. Culture of violence is perpetuated with our economic culture, our religious, philosophical ideology, to grow endlessly, in a finite planet. I see this as a reaction to such a large overpopulated region, the more increase in population to more violence it leads.

      1. Religion, has created violence, millions of people died due to religious persecution. Ultimately religion is a creation by people, all values, order, texts, prophecy and stories were done by people.

  7. Its quite easy to be polarized over a decision for rape penalty in India.In Franse, they give 15 year sentences or it can also be extended upto 30 years. In Saudi Arabia, penalty is public beheading.So, somewhere a strict penalty ll break this kinda untolerable activities.But we should not turn our face toward judicial system and wait for justice. Ok , Men and Women both have 2 hands and 2 feets, so then why women are believed to be waeker than men??? Believe me, i feel more happiness , when i hear a woman is sweating in gym than a man.Do you have guts to rape Mary kom??? No man, she ll show you your ground. Then my question is why not all the girls do some physical workout like boxing, martial arts etc??? But they most of the times do makeup and all those fancy stuff.Its up to us what we want for us. I am not telling to women not to decorate their beuty but they should atleast spend 30 minutes on their fitness.

    1. thank you Rohit for reading this post and giving your wonderful feedback as you always gave..:) you are right women should be able to protect herself but in many places women are not allowed to do these things.. however if a woman or a girl is weak it does not mean men have the right to molest her… your suggestion is very good. i think every school should make martial art or self defense skills for girls.. our legal system is not so strong to stop these things.. we should protest against these things..

  9. A thought-provoking post. This needs social re-engineering at the grass roots level. The attitude towards women is far off the mark, especially for a country which boasts of having a great past and aspires to be an important player on the global stage. This change has to start from our kitchens and dining rooms.

  16. Sadly, this is all too true. India, of course, is not the only country in which these things happen, or even the worst, but in a 21st century democracy it is disgraceful that it does. Of course, women are victimised and discriminated all over the world and it is impossible to name a country in which men and women are genuinely, truly, treated as equals. The world still has a long way to go, and education has to play a major role in the changes to come.

  19. Such a long list of brutalities agaist women. My soul shivers just at the thought of incidents. My heart bleeds out to the victims. And their condition? People are kind of ashamed to support the victims

    1. Thanks Prachi for the feedback… the saddest part is victims are treated as culprits if it is a crime against woman… Even a woman don’t support another woman who is a victim.. This should be changed… Crimes against women should be stopped now..

    (From the book Hinduism Beyond Rituals, Customs And Traditions by Promod Puri)

    Since bias knows no boundaries, Manusmriti not only expounds the social distance between the upper and lower castes, but it also delineates the status of women by curbing their rights. It lists guidelines for men in selecting marriage partners and puts a stamp of their superiority by creating gender inequality.

    In chapter 3 with numbered paragraphs here it is what Manusmriti prescribes:

    One should not marry women who have reddish hair, redundant parts of the body [such as six fingers], one who is often sick, one without hair or having excessive hair and one who has red eyes.
    One should not marry women whose names are similar to constellations, trees, rivers, those from a low caste, mountains, birds, snakes, slaves or those whose names inspires terror.
    Wise men should not marry women who do not have a brother and whose parents are not socially well known.
    Wise men should marry only women who are free from bodily defects, with beautiful names, grace/gait like an elephant, moderate hair on the head and body, soft limbs and small teeth.
    For if the wife is not radiant with beauty, she will not attract her husband; but if she has no attractions for him, no children will be born.
    If the wife is radiant with beauty, the whole house is bright; but if she is destitute of beauty, all will appear dismal.
    By a girl, by a young woman, or even by an aged one, nothing must be done independently, even in her own house.
    In childhood a female must be subject to her father, in youth to her husband, when her lord is dead to her sons; a woman must never be independent.
    She must not seek to separate herself from her father, husband, or sons; by leaving them she would make both (her own and her husband’s) families contemptible.
    She must always be cheerful, clever in (the management of her) household affairs, careful in cleaning her utensils, and economical in expenditure.
    Him to whom her father may give her, or her brother with the father’s permission, she shall obey as long as he lives, and when he is dead, she must not insult (his memory).
    Though destitute of virtue, or seeking pleasure (elsewhere), or devoid of good qualities, (yet) a husband must be constantly worshiped as a god by a faithful wife.
    No sacrifice, no vow, no fast must be performed by women apart (from their husbands); if a wife obeys her husband, she will for that (reason alone) be exalted in heaven.
    A faithful wife, who desires to dwell (after death) with her husband, must never do anything that might displease him who took her hand, whether he be alive or dead.
    A virtuous wife who after the death of her husband constantly remains chaste, reaches heaven, though she has no son, just like those chaste men.
    But a woman who from a desire to have offspring violates her duty towards her (deceased) husband, brings on herself disgrace in this world and loses her place with her husband (in heaven).

    And in Chapter 9 Manusmriti further explicates under each numbered paragraphs that:

    Her father protects (her) in childhood, her husband protects (her) in youth, and her sons protect (her) in old age; a woman is never fit for independence.
    No man can completely guard women by force, but they can be guarded by the employment of the (following) expedients:
    Let the (husband) employ his (wife) in the collection and expenditure of his wealth, in keeping (everything) clean, in (the fulfillment of) religious duties, in the preparation of his food, and in looking after the household utensils.
    She who, controlling her thoughts, speech, and acts, violates not her duty towards her lord, dwells with him (after death) in heaven, and in this world is called by the virtuous a faithful (wife, sadhvi).
    But for disloyalty to her husband a wife is censured among men, and (in her next life) she is born in the womb of a jackal and tormented by diseases, the punishment of her sin.

    In this dehumanized and demoralized portrait of the unequivocal surrender of a woman from childhood to death, restricting every step of her stage in life, one wonders if there are few soft spots of dignity, honor and some rewards for her sacrifices in the Manusmriti.

    Yes, there are. Along with the prejudice against low caste Hindus and women, Manu has some cheering exhibits in the otherwise demeaning declarations in the Manusmriti.

    In Chapter 3 with numbered paragraphs of Manusmriti his preachings and observation include:

    Women must be honored and adorned by their fathers, brothers, husbands, and brothers-in-law, who desire (their own) welfare.
    Where women are honored, there the gods are pleased; but where they are not honored, no sacred rite yields rewards.
    Where the female relations live in grief, the family soon wholly perishes; but that family where they are not unhappy ever prospers.
    The houses on which female relations, not being duly honored, pronounce a curse perish completely as if destroyed by magic.
    Hence men, who seek (their own) welfare, should always honor women on holidays and festivals with (gifts of) ornaments, clothes, and (dainty) food.
    In that family, where the husband is pleased with his wife and the wife with her husband, happiness will assuredly be lasting.

    These silver linings in the Manusmriti provide a built-in support to decertify those defamatory statements which are not only illegal as per the constitution of India is concerned but morally, spiritually and ethically wrong.
